John Tory Talks Olympic Bid

Although San Francisco was well-liked as a possible Olympics site, there were several issues with it stemming from memories of the failed 2016 Olympics bid over a brooding disagreement between the San Francisco 49ers and the city regarding a proposed stadium near the team’s former home in Candlestick Park.

Initial bids are due to the global Olympic Committee on Sept. 15., but the committee won’t announce the 2024 host until September 2017.

The [USOC] board authorized Scott Blackmun to work with Los Angeles to further explore the viability of a bid to the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic games.

Because they already have numerous facilities in place, this makes it more likely that Los Angeles can be cost-effective in operating the Olympics.

Canadian Olympic Committee president Marcel Aubut told the CBC that should Toronto council approve a bid, he would “absolutely lead and advocate with the whole power of my office that Toronto becomes the host city for 2024 Olympic Games“.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh’s refusal to agree to sign the agreement was a final factor in the USOC’s decision to withdraw its support of the Boston bid. Tory is gathering as much information as he can before committing to bid for the 2024 Summer Games.

Over the past week, we have had very positive discussions with the United States Olympic Committee about how Los Angeles can present a strong and fiscally responsible bid on behalf of our city and nation. And there are many in the media at least who feel the IOC is keen to see the Summer Games return to Europe in 2024 after these next two stints (Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo) overseas.

Now, there are indeed some reasons to hope than an L.A. games could avoid some of the worst of the red ink that has befallen other Olympics: The city does have a lot of existing venues, for starters.

“People remember that time”, he said. There are enough venues left from 1984 to host the games that Garcetti does not anticipate the need to build new ones.

The mayor has said he wouldn’t rule on the possibility of a third bid until after the Parapan Am Games, which wrap up Saturday.

The U.S. viewing public pays for the Games-and that helps Toronto.

He said that the level of support enjoyed by the bid would not allow it to prevail over other bids from Paris, Rome, Hamburg, Budapest or Toronto.
