Walker’s ideal game attempt was spoiled when shortstop Ketel Marte committed a throwing error on Kaleb Cowart’s grounder with two outs in the sixth.
“It was night and day the way we faced him up in Seattle a couple weeks ago”, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. Prior to Aoki’s third homer on the year, Marte had a run-scoring fly ball to bring in Leonys Martin, who reached on a single.
“They said, “It’s going to be hard to get a triple, ‘” Cruz said”.
Walker (6-10) still had a no-hitter going, until Kole Calhoun came through with a leadoff single through the right side in the seventh inning. The left-handed hitting Aoki is 8-for-20 with two homers, six RBIs and eight runs scored during a five-game hitting streak but figures to be on the bench against Skaggs in favor of right-handed hitting Franklin Gutierrez (5-for-8, two homers versus Skaggs).2.
With many fans no doubt in front of their televisions to watch the Rams play their first game since returning to Southern California, the actual crowd at the ballpark seemed to be significantly less than the paid total.
“I was getting nervous, My stomach started to tighten up a bit. I’ll let the kid hit”. He reached rock bottom when last facing the Angels on September 3; he was charged with six runs (five earned) in recording but two outs when losing his fourth consecutive start. Smith’s was the biggest blow, a grand slam in the sixth inning that turned the game into a rout. He drove Morin’s 1-1 off-speed offering over the scoreboard and into the right field stands. Los Angeles SS Andrelton Simmons (hand) has missed two straight games and can’t yet grip a bat.3. Simmons, who jammed his hand in Sunday’s game, was initially in the lineup before being replaced by Pennington.
Mariners: RHP Hisashi Iwakuma will take the mound in the series finale. The Seattle Mariners have won seven straight games and have narrowed the gap in their pursuit of the playoffs.
Angels: RHP Jhoulys Chacin will take Skaggs’ place in the rotation.
