Officials say 6 people killed in Pakistan train accident

At least six people were killed and more than 100 injured when two trains collided in central Pakistan early Thursday, officials said.

The pre-dawn accident happened near the town of Sher Khan in Punjab province 15 minutes after the freight train stopped after hitting a man on the track, railway official Saima Bashir said.

Reportedly, four bogies of Awami Express got off-track, after crashing into goods train, which was there on the track without schedule.

The collision wrecked the engine and power van, and overturned four bogies of the Awam Express, Mr Chattha added.

About 10 people were badly injured.

There was a delay in response for rescue services due to Eid holidays, according to sources in Pakistan railways. Relief works were also affected as darkness prevailed in the vicinity.

The train was en route to Karachi from Peshawar.

Meanwhile, authorities have imposed emergency at Multan’s Nishtar Medical Hospital and Shahbaz Sharif Hospital.

Pakistan Railways also ordered an investigation into the mishap, directing all of the concerned officials reach the accident spot.
