Mr Ng said the state has initiated measures to curb the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes, which spreads the both the Zika and the more unsafe dengue viruses, and called on all to help eradicate the vectors. “It also can rarely be spread by sex from someone who is infected”, said Dr. Schwartz.

She said all three cases have since recovered and did not require hospitalization. “Although it is not certain that these types of close contact were the source of transmission, family contacts should be aware that blood and body fluids of severely ill patients might be infectious”.

On Feb. 1 the World Health Organization declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern because of clusters of microcephaly and other neurological disorders affecting certain areas.

Thailand has recorded about 200 cases of Zika since January, the health ministry said on Tuesday (September 13), making it a country with one of the highest numbers of confirmed cases in the region.

James O’Neal, speaking after the agency’s monthly board meeting on Tuesday, said that, should the virus start spreading here, the state has teams of people ready to rapidly deploy to areas where cases pop up.

The Zika virus is non-fatal to the general population, but it can pose dangers to a baby in the womb.

“Allowing this to happen needlessly puts Americans at risk and will result in more Zika infections and, potentially, the birth of more babies with infections and Zika-related birth defects”.

Additionally, just like with Ebola, all healthcare workers, cosmetic care workers, and personal caretakers should be aware if their clients have recently traveled in Zika-infected areas and take all precautions for their own safety. One patient in the central beach city of Nha Trang was a 64-year-old woman, while another in Ho Chi Minh City was 33 years old and pregnant at the time. “Its effect on the adult brain may be more subtle, and now we know what to look for”. The CDC could not say for sure if that’s indeed how patient A caught the virus.
