Typhoon cuts power, lashes China

The railway authorities in Nanchang, east China’s Jiangxi Province, announced Wednesday to cancel 144 trains that had been scheduled between Wednesday to Saturday to southern and eastern cities in an emergent response to the typhoon.

The Xiamen Power Supply Co. said that the typhoon has madesevere damages to the power grid in Xiamen, causing mass blackout.The electricity supply was also disrupted in Xiamen’s outlyingislands. Four worldwide flights and 90 domestic ones were canceled Thursday.

One person died and 38 were injured in Taiwan, the Central Emergency Operation Centre there said, as the typhoon hit the southern part of the island on Wednesday.

“Losses probably can not be avoided, but we’ll try to minimize casualties”, he said.

China’s national meteorological center downgraded Meranti to a tropical storm Thursday afternoon and said it expected the storm to fade as it moves north.

It was only within a matter of hours that Meranti grew from a typhoon to a super typhoon and became the strongest storm in the western Pacific Ocean since Super Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines back in November 2013.

According to the English language lifestyle blog shanghaiist.com, Typhoon Meranti has nixed the highlight of the mid-Autumn festival, tonight’s full moon, so cities across China have set up mini model moons for people to have their pictures taken with.

This is the second typhoon to affect Taiwan in 2016. Assessments of damage and injuries were not immediately clear.

Super Typhoon Meranti was packing maximum sustained winds of 178 miles per hour (155 knots) as it moved south of Taiwan early Wednesday morning. It is named Typhoon Malakas.
