Facebook and Twitter are exhausted of people using their social media platforms to spread what they believe is false information and low-quality news, so they’ve joined with a number of global news organizations to “improve” the quality of the news content they offer.

The partner network includes Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, The New York Times, Washington Post, BuzzFeed News, CNN, ABC News of Australia, ProPublica, AFP, The Telegraph, France Info, Breaking News, Le Monde’s Les Decodeurs, International Business Times UK, Eurovision News Exchange and Al Jazeera Media Network.

Jenni Sargent, managing director of First Draft, said the partner network will help advance the organisation’s goal of improving news online and on social networks.

The First Draft Coalition aims to improve news reporting, verify stories, and stop the spread of rumours and hoaxes online.

First fruits of this collaboration are yet to be seen but Facebook’s journalism partnerships manager Áine Kerr has already announced that the largest social network on the planet will definitely benefit from First Draft News.

“First Draft Coalition, an Alphabet-backed venture, said it would create a voluntary code of practice, attempt to increase news literacy among social media users and will aunch a collaborative verification platform”, tech website CNET reported on Tuesday.

The partner network is created to help news organisations work with the tech companies to improve newsgathering, and make verification of information from social media more effective and easier to access. “We’re excited to introduce this new experience to people, without requiring a paywall or having to log in to Twitter.” said Anthony Noto, chief financial officer at Twitter.

“Each partner is committed to sharing knowledge, developing policies and devising training in how journalists use the social web to find and report news”.

“We are not going to solve these problems overnight, but we’re certainly not going to solve them as individual organizations”, First Draft added.
