Tropical Storm Julia dumped heavy rains along coastal Georgia and SC on Wednesday, weakening as it drifted north along the U.S. Southeast coast, the National Hurricane Center said.

Tropical Depression Twelve was centered west of the Cape Verde Islands, and the depression could become a tropical storm late Wednesday or on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a new tropical depression has formed far out over the Atlantic and is moving west.

Packing maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour, the storm is expected to move faster toward the west and gradually weaken.

This was the first time in recorded history that a name was given to a tropical system over land in Florida by the National Hurricane Center.

“Forecasters say an isolated tornado is possible in coastal Georgia and SC as well”.

“As we know Florida storms can quickly develop, bringing severe weather to our state in a moment’s notice”, he said.

Many Floridians woke up Wednesday morning asking, “Julia who?” when they heard that Tropical Storm Julia had developed Tuesday night over land near Jacksonville.

“A slow and erratic motion is expected over the next couple of days”, forecasters wrote in the hurricane center’s 11 a.m. Wednesday Tropical Weather Outlook report.

Neither Tropical Storm Ian nor Tropical Storm Julia pose any threat to the islands. Nevertheless, a small area of tropical-storm-force winds should continue to push northward along the coast within the warning area tonight.

According to the National Weather Service, the coastal areas of Beaufort County could see up to 8 inches of rain through Friday.

Tropical Storm Julia formed overnight, with the center of the storm forming over land instead of over, as is usually the case.

Currently, Ian is forecast about 695 miles east of Bermuda as of 10 a.m. CDT and was moving north at 20 mph.

Julia is also forecast to weaken into a tropical depression.

The main threat will be flooding as winds will continue to weaken and the storm will likely quickly be downgraded to a tropical depression later this afternoon.
