Soon after the state erupted into hysteric protests all over Mandya, with shops, hotels and other commercial establishments and theatres and hotels remained shut and schools and colleges declared a holiday in the district.
It said the live storage in four reservoirs in the Cauvery basin is now at 46.7 TMCFT against their capacity of 104 TMCFT making the implementation hard but “constitutionally, it is not possible to defy it (the Supreme Court’s order)”.
The state government should convene an all party meeting to discuss and find a solution to the vexed issue, she said.
The present live storage is 45% against the live storage of 104 TMCFT in the Krishnaraja Sagar, Harangi, Hemavathi and Kabini reservoirs, the government has said.
Regular transport has been affected since the government has made a decision to cut as many as 700 buses plying to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. “It is very hard to live without the water of Cauvery”.
In the face of opposition against the government’s move, government sources said water had been released in the past too during the tenures of previous Chief Ministers H.D. Deve Gowda, S.M. Krishna, B.S. Yeddyurappa and Jagadish Shettar.
The bandh will see a complete shutdown of the state and plans are afoot to block roads and stop traffic.
The Karnataka government has written to the centre asking for a team of observers to visit the region to first-hand experience the difficulty in sharing water after disappointing rains.
This is the second bandh that the state is bracing for in a week’s time and the fourth this year. The court has ordered us to release 15,000 cusecs for 10 days.
“We have also banned visitors and tourists from entering the KRS dam and Brindavan Gardens near Mysuru till September 9 to prevent protesters and agitating farmers from staging demonstrations or laying siege at the sluice gates”, a district official told IANS earlier.
In Ballari, three lorries bearing Tamil Nadu registrations were stoned by protesters.
At a press meet, Nagma stated that Tamil Nadu received a lot of help from Karnataka and especially from the people of Bengaluru.
