The two men, wearing anti-Lochte T-shirts, were arrested on suspicion of criminal trespassing, Los Angeles police spokesman Officer Mike Lopez said.
The Olympic gold medalist has been at the center of controversy for the past month due to an incident that occurred while he was in Rio de Janeiro for the Summer Games.
The events of the infamous night remain unclear. Lochte was in the middle of an interview when two men ran towards him and tried to ambush him on stage.
Although perhaps unjustly, Lochte and his teammates have become to many symbols of “The Ugly American”, a term coined in the bestselling book by the same name that chronicled American transgressions and spoiled behavior while traveling overseas. “We thought it was a joke, something part of the show”, Lochte revealed post-show.
The network went to a commercial break, but the camera briefly showed Lochte and his dancing partner, Cheryl Burke, as both appeared flustered and surprised. “Me and Ryan have gotten the pleasure to know each other and he’s is an fantastic guy”. Despite the rough start, Lochte claims he remains positive and proud of himself for taking a risk in competing in a show like “Dancing With the Stars”.
“We were shocked and we have a very good security system here”, Bergeron told ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Tuesday.
When the show returned, judge Tom Bergerson thanked the ABC series’ security team “for staying in shape”.
Lochte has been the subject of negative publicity and public derision after he admitted to exaggerating claims that he and fellow US swimming teammates had been robbed at gunpoint during the Rio Olympics.
After the scene, Lochte told Bergeron, “So many feelings are going through my head right now”. “A little hurt but, you know, I came out here and wanted to do something that I’m completely not comfortable with and I did, and I came out here with a big smile and I had the best dance partner”.
The duo were in the middle of receiving feedback from judge Carrie Ann Inaba when they were interrupted. Lochte eventually lost four of his sponsorships and was suspended from the Olympic team for ten months.
