Boy, 13, fatally shot by police after pulling out BB gun

A 13-year-old boy has died after an officer-involved shooting in east Columbus.

Rice, a black sixth-grade student, was holding a pellet gun when the officer shot him within two seconds of arriving at the scene.

Police responded to a report of an armed robbery in the area of S. 18th St. and E. Capital St. around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday.

A police officer fatally shot a 13-year-old he was trying to detain following reports of an armed robbery, according to officials in Columbus, Ohio. One had a gun and demanded money.

The 46-year-old male and female officers were both treated for non life-threatening injuries at a local hospital. Officers gave chase and King and another man ran into an alley where a policeman shot him multiple times after he pulled a weapon from his trousers, police told the station.

Crime Scene Search Unit detectives collected the gun and determined it was a BB gun with an attached laser site.

Police said the officers saw three males matching the descriptions of the suspects and tried to speak with them, when two of the suspects fled on foot. King was shot multiple times.

The male with King was interviewed and released pending further investigation and police are seeking more suspects. Police said additional suspects were being sought.

The officers and other suspects were not injured.
