On the backdrop of North Korea’s unusually frequent military provocations, South Korea and the US’ presidents vowed to increase efforts to push for the global community’s thorough implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2270 during their summit Tuesday in Vientiane, Laos.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo have agreed to co-operate in monitoring the threat from North Korea.

China’s U.N. Ambassador Liu Jieyi, apparently annoyed that the missile firings by its ally were timed to coincide with the Group of 20 economic summit in China, told reporters: “We’ll see what the council will decide”.

North Korea’s regular nuclear tests are a clear violation of the UN Security Council’s resolutions and this needs to stop, Ban’s spokesman said.

At the same, however, China voiced its disapproval Monday of a South Korea-U.S. missile shield in the region.

South Korea’s Park said that her neighbor’s “continued missile launches are fundamentally threatening the security of both the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia”.

The Council expressed serious concern that the country conducted the latest launches after a series of earlier ones – held intermittently on different occasions between April 15 and August 22 – in flagrant disregard of repeated Council statements.

“So without getting ahead of the council we were also interested in increasing the consequences after this pattern of using these launches to advance the capabilities of the program”, she said.

“I send a stern warning that the continuation of such reckless provocations will lead North Korea down the path of self-destruction”, Park said.

The three missiles were the “Rodong” type with a medium-range and able to fly about 1,000 kilometers, informed the South Korean army.

Leader Kim Jong-Un described the August test as the “greatest success” and said it put the USA mainland within striking range. He said that “in a slower time, we should look at that question about sanctions or what other further significant measures we might think about”.
