The hosts managed to hold firm in the remainder of the first half, though, and even created a handful of half-chances as the opening 45 minutes ended goalless.

Now the 23-year-old is hoping that impressive showing is just the start, telling Everton TV: “I am back in business now”.

“The start in the Premier League is good – 10 points from four games – but we need to continue and we need to prepare for the next game on Saturday against Middlesbrough because maybe that will be more tough and more hard than it was in the second half tonight”.

Hat-trick hero Lukaku got all the goals thanks to a remarkable 11-minute second half blitz.

Moyes said: “We are putting together a new team”. We had good defending – that wasn’t the problem – the problem was when we had ball possession in the midfield and up front.

The following two tabs change content below. It’s my first hat-trick for the club in the Premier League so I’m delighted. For two of the goals from crosses, I couldn’t believe we didn’t have defenders in the middle of the goal, especially against Lukaku.

The outstanding Gueye then went close after Lukaku scuffed his shot before Lukaku saw the crossbar deny him a second in the 63rd minute.

Everton striker Romelu Lukaku: “We could have done better in the first half”.

“I don’t think we can give up their energy but I have to balance that up with getting some experience in the team as well”.

“Strikers look to score goals and it’s always a little doubt in his mind about not scoring for Everton but I told him the best answer is always on the pitch”.

Sunderland were still reeling from the second goal when Everton struck again in the 71st minute.

Speaking about breaking his Premier League goal duck for the season, he added: “It was all about my fitness levels, they weren’t as good as I wanted them to be”.

“It’s good to have a bit of money but it’s also sometimes good to realise you’ve got to get out on to the training ground and teach players, build them into a team”.

In fact, Everton could have won by a more convincing margin, with Lukaku himself admitting he could have scored “five in the end”.
