“Now, it’s a very different system, and I don’t happen to like the system, but certainly in that system, he’s been a leader”.

Trump has previously angered many in the military community with mocking remarks against US Senator and former prisoner of war John McCain for being captured in Vietnam.

Clinton hammered Trump for the comments in a press conference Thursday morning, calling them “unpatriotic” and “insulting”.

As secretary of state, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton tried to improve relations with the country, touting a “reset” – complete with a reset button for a photo-op – in 2009 with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

“I was just thinking about all of the presidents that would just be looking at one another in total astonishment”, Clinton told reporters on Thursday morning, referring to Trump’s controversial comments about US generals, Russian Federation and Middle East oil at the forum”.

“After Labor Day, as people are really looking at this race, a ticket that is praising a dictator who is hurting his country, hurting his people, as some example of leadership, is frightful”, Kaine, the running mate of Hillary Clinton, said after being asked about the controversy over Putin.

In what may be seen as his latest overture to Russia, Donald Trump sat down for an interview that was aired on a state-sponsored television station. He noted Putin’s high approval rating was at 82% and told moderator Matt Lauer he was a better leader than President Barack Obama.

The Democratic nominee said she will be convening a bipartisan meeting on national security on Friday, focused on defeating ISIS.

Trump’s interview surfaced as he and Clinton continue to clash over foreign policy in the run-up to the November 8 presidential election. “That’s not only risky, it should be disqualifying”.

The forum in NY will allow both campaigns to shift their messages to national security, a major topic for voters given the threat of Islamist militants, China’s military activities in the South China Sea, and nuclear-armed North Korea’s ballistic missile tests.

Trump’s campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, defended Trump’s appearance to CNN’s Chris Cuomo on “New Day” on Friday, saying that Trump wasn’t criticizing the USA to say the Iraq War was a failure. Some supporters shrugged off his comments about Putin.

Trump’s interview with King was promoted by RT America as an exclusive.

“If he says great things about me, I’m going to say great things about him”, Trump said of Putin.

She hammered Trump for trashing USA generals – Trump said Wednesday night that they’d been reduced to “rubble” under President Obama – and she portrayed the GOP nominee’s plan for taking Middle East oil as absurd.

Donald Trump has drawn ire for his camaraderie with Russian president Putin.

“Vladimir Putin is an aggressor that does not share our interests”.

“He doesn’t agree with his style of government. I could tell, they were not happy our leaders did not follow what they were recommending”, he said.

“He’s running his country, and at least he’s a leader, unlike what we have in this country”, Trump said, when presented with some critiques of Putin.
