Hermine remained a post-tropical cyclone Sunday, as it traveled northeast along the East Coast, carrying the threat of coastal flooding, beach erosion and risky rip currents.

By 2 pm Saturday, Hermine’s top sustained winds had increased again to 70 miles per hour (110 kph) as it moved east at 10 miles per hour (17 kph).

One storm-related death was reported by authorities in the northern Florida town of Ocala, where a fallen tree killed a homeless man sleeping in his tent.

Although Hermine is no longer a hurricane-force storm after hitting Florida earlier this weekend, tropical storm-force wind gusts of 40 to 60 miles per hour, rough seas and significant coastal flooding are still expected along the mid-Atlantic and southern New England coasts on Monday, according to Accuweather. Hazardous seas, dangerously rough surf and a life-threatening rip current risk can be expected through the weekend and into early next week.

Robert McHugh, a New Jersey co-founder of online payment service Paydunk, posted a harrowing series of videos Sunday from the Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.

Despite sunny skies, holiday beachgoers were warned to avoid the sea Sunday due to unsafe currents and heavy waves.

The New York Post said police issued $80 tickets to at least four surfers at the Rockaway Beach surf spot.

“People from NY and New Jersey are kind of stuck here (during bad weather), so they can still come”, if forecasts don’t play out as predicted, Khan said. “Don’t think that nothing is going to happen, because something is going to happen”.

Any Labor Day weekend plans that included a beach trip may have to be changed for residents living in coastal areas from Virginia to CT as Tropical Storm Hermine picks up speed on its way northward, forecasters say.

With tropical storm warnings up the East Coast to Fenwick Island and into the Chesapeake Bay Friday, Tropical Storm Hermine was poised to pass over into the Atlantic off North Carolina Saturday.

“Making repairs in high winds is not a safe thing for them to do”, he said.

The storm will then turn north and regain strength on Sunday and stall off the coast Sunday night into Monday.

The storm originated in the Atlantic and intensified over the Gulf of Mexico, making landfall as a hurricane in Florida.

States in the Northeast are preparing for Hermine’s wrath: New Jersey has declared a state of emergency for Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May counties.

On Saturday, high winds tipped over an 18-wheeler, killing its driver and shutting down the USA 64 bridge in North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

Tyrell County Sheriff Darryl Liverman told the Virginian-Pilot that high winds tipped over an 18-wheeler, killing its driver and shutting down the USA 64 bridge.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo closed Long Island’s coastal beaches on Sunday.

“If you weren’t in the flood prone area, it was like a normal day”, he said.
