Tottenham vs Monaco in the Champions League

Kane’s miss turned out to be crucial as the hosts failed to create another chance in the final ten minutes of play to start their Champions League campaign with a defeat.

“Mentally we tried to think back to how we were emotionally on the night we played so well and won against Arsenal at the Emirates”, he said.

Pochettino has ordered some of the pitches at Tottenham’s Enfield base to match the dimensions of Wembley, while Spurs had a single training session at the national stadium earlier in the season.

“We didn’t help ourselves in the first half”, Alli said.

As the clock ran down, Monaco frustrated the Wembley crowd by playing comfortable possession football that ensured a late charge for a Spurs equaliser never materialised.

“We conceded the second in the same circumstances”.

Eight of Monaco’s last nine Champions League goals have been scored in the second half.

“We need to work more on being aggressive, to show we are hungry on the pitch”.

“When you play for Tottenham, it is hard to accept the way that we conceded the goal today”. We showed a lack of passion in the first half especially.

Pochettino has highlighted in the past how White Hart Lane is one of the smallest playing surfaces in the Premier League and there have been theories about how it can stifle Tottenham against opponents who sit deep and mass players behind the ball.

The 22-year-old former Sporting CP player joined Spurs in 2014 and has transformed into a key player from Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Spurs faced Monaco in the Europa League group stage last season, drawing 1-1 away in the principality before triumphing 4-1 at home courtesy of an Erik Lamela hat-trick – and both sides have now both taken a step up into the continent’s elite club competition.

Speaking after the match, a delighted Jardim explained: “We were determined to stop Tottenham in their transitions”. When I speak about passion it is about feeling more. We’re definitely a confident side and we do expect to win games, no matter who is in front of us.

That figure set a new English club record for a home attendance and they witnessed Mauricio Pochettino’s players dominate for much of the game but pay the price for sloppiness in defence and wastefulness in attack. We want to go as far as we can, we feel we have a group that we can definitely qualify from.
