The visiting Mt. San Antonio College lineman Bernard Schirmer was accused of punching the unidentified side judge in the middle of the third quarter in the game against Ventura College, college police confirmed.

Ventura College police booked Schirmer into Ventura County Jail after the incident on suspicion of felony battery on a sports official. He was taken to Ventura County jail.

Schirmer was released on bail about 7 a.m. Sunday, said sheriff’s Capt. Romano Bassi. He is scheduled to officiate another game Saturday.

The referee was “doing fine” Monday morning, a spokeswoman for the Ventura County Community College District said.

“I talked to him yesterday. The young man was really just trying to get himself together again”, said Mt. SAC Athlete Director Joe Jennum. He is scheduled to officiate at another game Saturday.

Prosecutors will decide whether to charge Schirmer.

According to the school’s team roster, Schirmer is 6 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs about 270 pounds. “I’m truly sorry about what happened to the ref”. “I tried to approach him and my teammates were holding me back and I had no idea that the official was, like, hugging me or something”.

Schirmer claims he often hits himself on the helmet to calm himself down.
