“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of Officer Timothy Brackeen”, the Rhode Island State Police said in a statement. At that point, Fenner eluded police, but they later tracked him down to the home in Coventry. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer.

Fenner is accused of shooting 38-year-old Officer Tim Brackeen of the Shelby Police Department in the North Carolina city on Saturday. Other responding officers heard the gunshots and found Brackeen wounded. State Police Colonel Steven O’Donnell said officers used tear gas to get into the building in Providence.

Police did, however, arrest Fenner’s half-sister on a charge of harboring a fugitive.

“[The dispatcher] had to take a breath because she was emotional”, Philbin said.

Fenner’s Facebook page says he lives in Shelby but hails from Providence, Rhode Island. WSOC reports that they are asking police when Fenner will be booked and brought back to North Carolina.

Rhode Island authorities said Irving Fenner Jr. was arrested around 2:30 a.m. The officer was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte but died on Monday.

Brackeen, a Shelby officer, was shot in the chest 12:20 a.m. on Saturday as he was searching for Fenner, who had failed to show up to an August court date for misdemeanor charges of carrying a concealed weapon and marijuana possession, according to the Charlotte Observer. Police say Fenner did not put up a fight once they found him. Authorities have since charged Fenner with attempted murder in Brackeen’s shooting. Their relationships to Fenner weren’t immediately clear. The SBI also arrested Ashley Hamrick Tuesday afternoon for harboring an escapee. Philbin said Fenner was not injured during his capture in Rhode Island but believes the suspect sustained the gunshot wound in his struggle with Brackeen. He said Fenner Jr. got out of the vehicle before they arrived home and that minutes later he and his girlfriend heard gunshots.

Brackeen was attempting to serve that warrant in the area of Parkview Street of Shelby when Fenner allegedly shot him.

He will be charged with first-degree murder, State Police said.
