Other players have since protested during the National Anthem, including on the anniversary of 9/11 on Sunday, when players from the Seattle Seahawks, Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins all demonstrated during the song in different ways.
Upton, who is engaged to Major League Baseball pitcher Justin Verlander, specifically condemned the players’ actions as “more horrific” because occurred on the 15th anniversary of the September 11 2001 terrorist attacks.
Several NFL players and a few teams joined a growing list of athletes speaking out against social injustice by peacefully protesting “The Star-Spangled Banner” before Week 1 games Sunday.
Stills expressed his gratitude to the “honest, hard-working” police officers, and said he will put his hand over his heart when he kneels to honor the “people who make our country so special”. “We hope today’s events will continue a respectful and thoughtful dialogue in our community on unity, inclusiveness and togetherness”.
The protests were inspired recently by San Francisco backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick, the first National Football League player who sat and knelt on one knee during preseason game anthems. For his display, Kaepernick drew criticism from GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, who suggested he “find a country that works better for him”. Many people are up in arms on Twitter because Foster and others didn’t want to stand for the National Anthem on 9/11. “If you’re proclaiming to be a true American, freedom runs in our bloodlines, right?” Both then appeared on the medal stands with raised, black-gloved fists throughout the US national anthem in what they called a “human rights salute”.
“They say it’s not the time to do this”.
“The one thing that they asked [was for] their coaches to give them their privacy”, Gase said after Friday’s practice.

While Kaepernick’s decision has sparked a nationwide debate, the Seahawks players garnered praise across the internet for making a bold statement while also respecting the US flag and the national anthem: “Today I will stand united with the Seahawks to #buildAbridge I challenge you to stand and link arms during the national anthem today”, tweeted actor Chris Pratt.
