League fines Broncos’ Stewart, Marshall for Newton hits

Broncos safety Darian Stewart has been fined by the National Football League $18,231 for his fourth-quarter hit and linebacker Brandon Marshall has been fined $24,309 for his third-quarter hit on Panthers quarterback Cam Newton Thursday’s game (Sept. 8) in Denver.

Doctors determined Newton did not suffer a concussion when he suffered helmet-to-helmet hits by the Broncos’ Brandon Marshall and Darian Stewart during Thursday’s loss.

Last Thursday night, the Denver Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers 21-20. Blandino attempted to explain why Newton may be hit more without penalty than other passers by suggesting Newton changes the way calls may be made (or not made) on him when he goes into a running mode.

Marshall, whose hit in the third quarter was not flagged, was fined $24,309, a source told ESPN.

“My focus right now is trying to win football games – though all the hits, everything”, he said. “I just got to be smarter next time”. I’m willing to wager we will be discussing this again at some point this season. He writes: “When it comes to addressing head injuries in our game, I’m not satisfied, and neither are the owners of the NFL’s 32 clubs”.

“At the end of the day, Cam deserves to be protected just Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Ryan Tannehill, Kirk Cousins, Andy Dalton, and the list goes on and on”, he said.

After nearly seven minutes of questions regarding the headshots he took against the Broncos, quarterback Cam Newton was ready to talk about something else.

“I know whole-heartedly that (head trainer) Ryan Vermillion and his staff did an exceptional job protecting me”, Newton said.

“You want the officiating to be consistent, but there were at least three or four plays where you look back and say, ‘Why wasn’t that called?,’ ” Mariucci said.

In winning the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award previous year, Newton passed for 3,837 yards with 35 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions, and rushed for 636 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.

Newton said he “can’t mourn or dwell on things that happened, from the statistics of me being hit to the types of hits that I’m taking”. “That’s it. Winning. Winning football games”, he said.

Broncos coach Gary Kubiak however has defended his players, denying suggestions that Denver had played “dirty”.

“I thought I got him with my shoulder, too, ” he said.
