Israel’s Peres in Stable But Serious Condition After Stroke

In the early morning, doctors conducted another medical examination of the Nobel laureate, and he was briefly taken off of medication. The fact that Peres was responsive when the sedative dose was lowered gives some reason for optimism, but it’s too early to assess if he suffered any brain damage, Walden said.

“This indicates that his cognitive functions are working and that he is capable of comprehending words and translating them into actions”.

On Wednesday, hospital director Yitzhak Kreiss said he was still in intensive care, but was stable and conscious.

“The very mild anaesthesia allows him to rest completely and provides optimal conditions for his brain to recover”.

“The recuperation process is now a natural one [by the brain] and can take weeks or even more”. His personal doctor, Prof. He added that Peres was responsive during treatment.

“We are happy to remark that when the sedation was a little lessened he was reactive”, Walden said. “He is stable with regard to all other parameters”.

His neurological condition was still unknown but chances of survival were seen as “pretty good”.

Speaking outside the hospital near Tel Aviv where Peres is being treated, Walden said the 93-year-old elder statesman was initially admitted to hospital on Tuesday as a precaution.

Mr Peres has held almost every major office in the country, including prime minister twice and president, a mostly ceremonial post, from 2007 to 2014.

In January, he underwent a successful minor surgery at the same hospital after suffering a small heart attack. His office said Peres received a pacemaker last week.

In a statement in front of the medical center, Peres’ son, Chemi, acknowledged to reporters that “in the coming hours, we will have to make decisions”, though he did not specify what those were. “I can’t really say full recovery, but we are keeping optimistic and hoping for the best”.

While Israel has never admitted it, experts believe the Jewish state possesses some 200 atomic warheads, making it the only nuclear power in the Middle East. Just $1 / first month.

Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who defeated Mr Peres in 1996 to become prime minister, called the hospital to enquire about his condition and posted a Facebook message wishing him a speedy recovery.
