Pochettino fumes at passionless Spurs

Spurs fell two goals behind in the opening half hour after Monaco punished sloppy play by the home side through a Bernard Silva effort on 15 and then a Thomas Lemar goal on the half hour.

After a brief flurry at the start of the second half Spurs struggled to break down Monaco and ultimately could have few complaints about their defeat, with Lloris admitting that fans were entitled to expect more.

‘What was the Tottenham score last night, mate?’ the Arsenal fan brutally asks, obviously knowing full well what the scoreline was.

Alli started the game in a deeper central midfield berth alongside Eric Dier but was far more influential when pushed further forward in the second half after Moussa Dembele had come on to replace Heung-Min Son. “We need to improve and learn we can not concede a goal like that first one”, Pochettino said when asked about the Wembley factor.

“I think we did do enough to win the game, but unfortunately it wasn’t our night”.

“We usually bounce back quite well from a defeat and we’ve got the next game against Sunderland [on Sunday] and the game after that, so it’s important that we do pick ourselves up and learn from it and make sure we improve and take that into the next game”.

Tottenham have been allowed to host their Champions League matches at the Wembley Stadium this season before they make a move to this ground permanently for the next season while the White Hart Lane is being redeveloped. It’s the first loss of the season.

The crowd set a new English club record for a home attendance and Mauricio Pochettino’s men dominated much of the contest, only to pay the price for sloppiness at both ends.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has questioned his player’s hunger after they fell 2-1 to Monaco in their first game of the Champions League.

“It was a fantastic occasion with all the fans, they filled it and kept singing”. Hopefully we’ll keep playing here and we’ll get a win. “But we know that it’s a group with very good teams, with four well-balanced teams who are also going to try and qualify”.

“Players love to play in a huge, full stadium, I think the size of the pitch affected Tottenham more than it did us”. I talk about passion, it’s to feel more.
