Ivanka Trump Takes Bow for Father’s Childcare Proposals

The report comes a day after the Republican nominee unveiled a series of child care policy proposals – which his daughter helped craft – including guaranteeing six weeks of unemployment benefits to working mothers whose employers do not guarantee paid maternity leave. And now the Republican nominee for president is out with a new plan that seems to break with conservative orthodoxy. For an increasing number of families, child care is their single largest expense – higher than what they pay for their housing.

Trump, during an interview on Good Morning America, contended that despite Clinton’s long political focus on child care, few changes have actually come about to help working families.

During a rally in Des Moines Tuesday afternoon, Trump credited Ivanka Trump for his action on the issue.

“She is the one who has been pushing for it so hard: ‘Daddy, Daddy we have to do this, ‘” Trump said in Iowa earlier Tuesday. It also proposes “spending rebates” of $1,200 for low-income families and six weeks of paid maternity leave paid, with the last part being paid for through fixes to supposed unemployment fraud. But as Clinton takes time off the campaign trail this week to recover from what her doctor says is pneumonia, Trump has the mic all to himself and is trying to get skeptical voters to give him a chance in the Oval Office.

Trump’s plan allows for a federal income tax deduction of childcare expenses for up to four children and elderly dependents. Couples with income of more than $500,000 and individuals with income exceeding $250,000 would be ineligible.

“As a society, we need to create policies that champion all parents, enabling the American family to thrive”, Ivanka Trump said before introducing her father on Tuesday night.

“While my opponent slanders you as deplorable and irredeemable, I call you, hard-working American Patriots who love your country, love your families, and want a better future for all Americans”, Trump said.

Trump says his child and elder care policies “will foster economic anf family growth”.

In another key point, the proposal would allow parents to deduct the average cost of child care from their taxes.

The money could be used for child care, after-school enrichment programs and private school tuition.

Ivanka then accused the reporter of putting “a lot of negativity” in to her questions after Gupta cited a 2004 NBC interview during which Trump said pregnancy is “inconvenient” for employers and called Trump’s plan “surprising”.

– Create a tax deduction for eldercare costs, limited to $5,000 a year. The ability to set aside funds will be particularly helpful to women, low-income workers and minorities, who are statistically more likely to reduce time working outside the home in order to provide unpaid care. (Clinton hasn’t provided specifics on how this tax relief would work.) Clinton also wants to provide financial aid to the almost 5 million college students who are raising children while attending school.
