NFLPA to run its own investigation on Cam Newton and concussion protocol

Dean Blandino, the league’s senior vice-president of officiating, and his staff reviewed the play and determined on Friday that Marshall should’ve been flagged for delivering a hit to Newton’s head after the quarterback had released the football, The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the NFL did not publicly comment on the details of its review. Denver’s Darian Stewart has vowed to appeal any fines that might come his way as a result of the Broncos’ Week 1 win over the Panthers.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – Gary Kubiak didn’t flinch when Trevor Siemian threw two interceptions in his first National Football League start, and neither did the no-longer-unknown quarterback.

After Gano’s 36-yard field goal brought the Panthers to 21-20, Carolina forced a three-and-out and got the ball back with 3:06 remaining.

He did so by engineering the kind of fourth-quarter comeback that made John Elway and Peyton Manning icons in this quarterback-crazed town. “We made too many mistakes playing and coaching”. But if the league truly wants to move toward a safer game, a more drastic change may have to be considered. “We weren’t in synch in the first half, and we had to just calm each other down, coaches had to calm down, and we got it rolling”.

“I’m beginning to question the consistency of how games are being called – and who they would call this particular play against versus this particular player”, Newton’s father said.

“The thing that we didn’t do and needed to do better, we should have shut the run down and forced the guy to win the game”. “Start thinking about the next one”, said Rivera, whose team plays San Francisco on September 18. They gave us the opportunity. Siemian’s second pick came in the third quarter when cornerback Ben Benwilkere snared a high pass intended for Emmanuel Sanders at the Panthers 10. “Now, he has to throw the ball away (but) we should have picked it up”, Kubiak said of the safety blitz that forced the turnover. We didn’t get that done. With the crowd getting into the game, there appeared to be a momentum shift inside Sports Authority Field, in favor of the home team. But it causes you to wonder – are you really biased or have some hidden reason [for treating him differently]? Forcing turnovers on Denver’s first two possession, the Carolina defense was making plays all over the field. That was until Cam Newton led the Carolina offense on an 18 play, 89 yard drive that took over nine minutes off the clock.

“The last time I talked to Cam was last night, and when I talked to him, he was feeling pretty good”. “Again, you’re asking from my perspective, and remember I played the game, so whenever I see a big hit I always look to see how a guy reacts, how a guy gets up”, Rivera said. “There are a lot of vets and a lot of great leadership in that group that I can lean on”. “They judge him different”. When he was asked about a “racial” component to negative opinions of him as a player this offseason, he shrugged that off completely even though it’s undoubtedly part of it. Newton is the bigger man, not just physically, and, if anything, that should make him even more valuable to the league.
