Even Kanye Concedes That His Shows Are Not Fashion

The rumor of a Kanye West and Drake collaborative album has been around for awhile – in the terms of music news – but now the project has been confirmed.

West is far from the first person to start a fashion show late (even by an hour), but the whole scenario was evidently more than many were willing to bear.

However, the show, which was streamed online on Jay Z’s Tidal service, got off to a rough start after it was delayed by over an hour. And though many thought his stunt at Madison Square Garden last season would be his most talked-about moment, it seems season 4 may have been his breaking point for fashionistas.

Words like “disaster”, “shambolic”, “fail” and “epic fail” are just a few of the descriptions tagged to the show Kanye presented on New York’s Roosevelt Island on Wednesday.

Speaking of models, several of Yeezy’s handpicked runway strutters were seen having a tough time walking in their high-heeled shoes.

“Kanye has been very stressed about his fashion show”, the source added. And, as you might have gathered, the collection wasn’t exactly warmly received by the fashion critics, what with it being both totally unwearable and unwalkable for everyday life. According to Page Six, Italian artist Vanessa Beecroft, West’s frequent collaborator, says the rapper purposely delayed the event.

Eager attendees, including Mrs. Kim Kardashian-West with Kendall and Kylie Jenner, saw the group of lucky women at the outdoor venue, along with celebs like Chanel Iman, Teyana Taylor and Sofia Richie. “I can go there most often, check in, get the vibe”. The group sat front row with Carine Roitfeld, Pharrell Williams and Lewis Hamilton, whose rumoured girlfriend Winnie Harlowwas also in attendance. Perhaps the most successful aspect of the show, as Tim Blanks noted at Business of Fashion, was how the color palette of the clothes reflected an array of skin tones.

Kylie also shared a short video of herself with on-again boyfriend Tyga as they walked the grounds of her brother-in-law’s destination fashion week show.

This is an indictment of not just Yeezy but the entire fashion and beauty industry in which there is a racialized hierarchy of beauty which is a ubiquitous symptom of the legacy of colonialism.
