Man Utd legend chastises Rodgers, Celtic for over-celebrating Champs League qualification

Former Celtic star Roy Keane is of the opinion that a 7-0 loss should be unacceptable for the Hoops. But as far as one-time Celtic midfielder Keane was concerned, Rodgers’ words were concerning. It’s not Altrincham – it’s Celtic.

I know it’s hard after a game and if you have an off-night in Barcelona you’re in big trouble.

Celtic suffered their heaviest-ever Euro defeat as they were thumped 7-0 by Barca in midweek.

“He spoke about the game the previous week against Rangers”. They won 5-1 against one of the worst Rangers teams I have seen in a long time, who finished with 10 men for the last 15-20 minutes. So that idea they were exhausted as well….

Speaking to STV’s Champions League highlights show, he said: “I just think they need to do a lot better in Europe”.

“They need to do a lot better in Europe, which is easier said than done”. I’m on about the qualifying games where they were scraping through and celebrating like they won the bloody thing.

“They may have had a bad day at the Nou Camp but they are very strong team in their own stadium and we’re expecting every game to be hard but we’ll go to Parkhead and try to get three points and play the same way we did against Monchengladbach”. Don’t accept, particularly away from home, being the whipping boys of Europe.

They then beat Astana 2-1 on aggregate to set up the tie with Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

“Even when they qualified for this group the celebrations were way over the top”.

‘I’ve been lucky to stop [Dembele’s penalty] but I think that penalties are a bit of luck and of course some preparation beforehand, ‘ he told TV3 as quoted by Spanish newspaper Marca.

Keane said last night: “I’m scratching my head sometimes with managers”.

“They’ve got to change the mindset”, he added. People were hugging each other – the manager, the coaches, the players – they should be expecting to do well, ‘ Keane told ITV.

But they were given a rude awakening in the opening Group C match in the Nou Camp on Tuesday night when Barcelona ran riot 7-0.

Keane had a spell at Celtic in 2006.

“They’ve got to change the mindset”. They are a really good team, a Bundesliga team and I watched them play earlier this year but City are on a high. I don’t necessarily mean the game against Barcelona, because that can happen.
