“Benghazi is a stupid witch hunt”, Powell wrote.

In a subsequent statement to NBC News, Powell said “the hackers have a lot more” of his emails.

Powell told BuzzFeed: “I have no further comment”.

Mr. Powell’s emails were posted online this week by the group DC Leaks, and Democrats have been pointing fingers at Russian Federation in the wake of the recent Democratic National Committee hack.

Leaving aside the fact the emails were leaked on a site linked to the Russian government, and the consequences (don’t type anything you don’t want on Twitter), the revelations fall into two camps: what we didn’t know but are not surprised to discover and what we didn’t know and perhaps didn’t expect.

Congressional Democrats have seized on the use of private email addresses by Powell and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as a foil for Republican attacks on Clinton. Powell’s spokesman confirms Powell’s emails were hacked.

In a May email titled “racism”, Powell wrote, “there is a level of intolerance in parts of the Republican Party”, which was a claim he made before the 2012 election.

Hillary Clinton said Thursday that she is “doing great” as she returns to the campaign trail after recovering from pneumonia.

The former secretary of state and four-star Army general who has been in the national spotlight since he was Ronald Reagan’s national security advisor let loose on Hillary Clinton (“greedy, not transformational”), her husband Bill (still “dicking bimbos”), and Donald Trump (a “national disgrace”). And he says that he resented Clinton dragging him into her email problems and that “everything [she] touches she kind of screws up with hubris”.

As Trump’s lead in the Republican primary solidified, Powell complained to CNN’s Fareed Zakaria about the network’s political coverage.

Powell, 79, did not respond Wednesday to a phone message or email seeking comment.

“Yup, the whole birther movement was racist”, the email read. “I had to throw a mini tantrum at a Hamptons party to get their attention”.

“I have told (Hillary’s) minions repeatedly that they are making a mistake trying to drag me in, yet still they try”, Powell wrote in an email sent in May to Democratic consultant Vernon Jordan. They are the latest in a series of leaks that appear aimed at influencing the 2016 presidential election.

Mrs Clinton has pointed to Mr Powell’s use of his personal AOL account at the state department as an example of why her email use was common practice.

In a 2014 email to Democratic donor Jeffrey Leeds, Mr. Powell described his misgivings about Mrs. Clinton’s presidential ambitions.
