“Certainly, I thought, ‘Oh my God, the league is going to be upset that this is what happens in game No. 1, ‘” Pereira said in the interview.

“I’m anxious about winning”, Newton said. “I feel as if there’s times I’ve been taking hits, they haven’t been called”. So I just can’t point a finger and say I haven’t got no calls because I have.

Newton got clobbered all night in the Panthers’ 21-20 loss, though only one of those helmet-to-helmet knocks was called a penalty.

The NFL and the NFL Players Association both said they were probing the response by medical personnel during the game.

Sometimes I’ve been hit and they’ve been called.

In regards to the game, it was obvious that the Denver Broncos were targeting Cam Newton.

Marshall has said he, too, expected a fine for his hit on Newton and admitted it appeared as though he launched at Newton’s head to try to tackle him. “There was no wooziness”. “I could see if we did something wrong”. It wasn’t no kind of tumble to the next play. “But that comes with football”.

“I disagree”, Kubiak said on Monday. “We’re not malicious. We don’t intentionally go to hurt anybody”. I’ve never seen anybody take that many blows and just keep bouncing up. “That’s it. Winning. Winning football games”, the quarterback said.

Newton’s father, Cecil Newton, said the family was “grossly disturbed” by the repeated shots his son absorbed in Week One. “That was a big hit”. His hit drew a flag, but it was negated by intentional grounding. “He’s a good young man and I think he has a good future, but for right now, that’s what we needed”.

Denver Broncos outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware (94) celebrates his sack of Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton with teammate Denver Broncos Brandon Marshall (54) during the second half of an NFL football game, Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016, in Denver.

“I know what it looked like, ” Marshall said. “He really is”, Rivera added.

Newton will put his body on the line again Sunday. He also found himself wishing he’d been flagged for his hit on Newton because that might have resulted in a fine such as Stewart’s. If he came out firing, his critics – and there are many – would likely label him a whiner or crybaby.

The NFL announced Wednesday it would commit 0 million to concussion-prevention initiatives, but it just placed a $42,540 price tag on the brain of its Most Valuable Player. He’ll find out soon enough whether all the noise produces change in how he’s officiated. “My job is to collect wins”.
