All teams are supposed to enter information on players into a central, Major League Baseball system each time a player receives any treatment, from handing out a couple ibuprofen to treatment for sore elbows.
Remember when the Padres traded Colin Rea to Miami, only to have a furious Marlins front office send him back to San Diego after he got hurt in his very first appearance with his new team? According to a report from ESPN, that snafu didn’t happen by accident.
ESPN’s Buster Olney reports that the Padres are now being investigated by Major League Baseball for improperly logging medical information about their players, for the express goal of gaining an advantage over other teams during trade talks.
The punishment comes on the heels of a report by ESPN’s Buster Posey, who reported that the Padres hid medical information regarding their players from the league’s database. Preller for 30 days without pay after an investigation into the trade of pitcher Drew Pomeranz to the Boston Red Sox.
“MLB’s Department of Investigations conducted the thorough review, which included interviews with relevant individuals from both clubs”.
According to the two sources with direct knowledge of the meetings, the athletic trainers were told that by splitting the medical files into two categories, the Padres would benefit in trade discussions. Major League Baseball also contacted the White Sox and “at least one other team” about complaints in the medical reporting from the Padres. MLB, which announced the suspension Thursday, said it considers the matter closed.
In 11 starts for the Red Sox, Pomeranz is 2-5 with a 4.60 ERA.

Having two such files allegedly enabled the Padres to hide players’ injury and health information from possible trade partners. When Preller ran global scouting operations for the Texas Rangers, Major League Baseball had suspended him for a month, reportedly over improper contact with a prospect.
