Over 100 New World Records Set in Rio 2016 Paralympics

It was another victory for Team Nigeria as Bose Omolayo grabbed gold in the powerlifting event at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Team Nigeria’s medal in the Games has increased to eight, following Latifat Tijani’s Silver, Roland Ezuruike’s Gold, Paul Kehinde’s Gold, and Oyema Esther’s Silver in their respective events.

The country’s disabled athletes have already racked up seven medals, including four golds, at the Rio 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Buoyed by her astounding success, the Nigerian requested for the weights to be set at 145kg outside of competition but was unable to repeat her record-breaking feat for a fourth time. She also won a Silver medal in London four years ago where she competed in the -56kg category. “I was confident of winning before the tournament started, but also nervous”, Cao told the Paralympic News Service.

China’s Xu Lili won the event’s silver medal, while Taipei’s Lin Tzu-Hui won the bronze medal.

New Zealand are now 10th on the medal table with four gold, threee silver and two bronze.

Souhad Ghazouani of France, who had earlier set the new Paralympic Games record, won the silver medal, while Egypt’s Amany Ali won the bronze.

If you look at gold medals per million of population, New Zealand slips to third with Fiji topping the list, and Jamaica rising to second spot.
