BMW Championship: Dustin Johnson beats Paul Casey to take title

Sept 11 Dustin Johnson recovered from a faltering start in the final round, roaring back to clinch a three-stroke victory at the BMW Championship in IN on Sunday.

The best thing for Johnson to do is just win the tournament, but even if he doesn’t, he is nearly assuredly the PGA Tour Player of the Year.

Northern Ireland’s world No3 Rory McIlory, meanwhile, failed to build on his victory at the Deutsche Bank Championship last week as he slipped out of the top five in the standings after carding a final round 72, which saw him finish well off the pace at Crooked Stick.

Dustin Johnson, 32, won this year’s BMW Championship with a 23-under par 265, three strokes ahead of Paul Casey and six strokes ahead of Roberto Castro.

Big-hitter Johnson has plundered the par-fives, playing them in 11-under, and his length has become an even more valuable weapon on a course softened all week by heavy rain.

Day, who is already guaranteed a place in the season-ending Tour Championship – starting on September 22 – and remains in with a chance of winning the FedEx Cup, has a history of back trouble.

It took him only three holes to give up his three-shot lead to Casey, but four birdies in the next five holes re-established his advantage and he was never headed again.

“I have a lot of confidence in my wedges and all the hard work I have put in (on his short game) has paid off”. In similar fashion, Day complained of back trouble at the WGC Dell Match Play in March and won that tournament, too.

Perhaps, just as important, is the fact he now leads the FedEx Cup with just the Tour Championship to play. “Definitely feel like I can get better with some things and hopefully improve by the time I get to East Lake”.

“I think I played really solid”, Johnson told NBC after beating Casey by three at the BMW Championship at Crooked Stick.

Schwartzel climbed to 30th in the FedEx cup standings, claiming the last spot in the season’s finale. As we all know, that can change in golf in the blink of an eye, and I’m sure Spieth is aiming to peak at East Lake and the Ryder Cup.

Fowler, who finished 59th in the 69-man field on Sunday, is among those hoping to be named on Monday among U.S. Ryder Cup captain Davis Love’s three wildcard picks for this month’s event against Europe.

Jason Day, who entered as the world’s No. 1 player, withdrew after eight holes with back pain, making him ineligible for the Vardon Trophy. It wasn’t my best ball-striking day.

“Hopefully, he’ll be ready for Atlanta”, Martin said. He could still win the Tour Championship to salvage what has been a mildly disappointing year (for him), but that got slightly more hard with the T42 finish at Crooked Stick.
