Smith: Rivers plans to finish career as a Charger, ‘wherever we are’

On Saturday, Rivers signed a contract extension that will have him in a Chargers uniform through 2019.

The San Diego Chargers will have Philip Rivers under center for another four-plus seasons after the two agreed to a contract extension during the preseason. He previously expressed a reluctance to raise his family in Los Angeles.

The four-year deal will pay Rivers $83.25 million, with $65 million guaranteed. The defense is still a question mark even though it was nice to see Melvin Ingram get some pressure.

All speculation of course, but Rivers and the Chargers can both get what they want. San Diego will be the likely destination that Philip will end his career. The news was a bit surprising after the team seemed sure that no deal would be reached before the regular season. “The fact that they wanted me to have the opportunity to finish here and continue to lead this team, that opportunity itself out-weighted any of those other variables that were out of my control”.

“My lack of excitement for a potential move was more about the thought of leaving this community than it was about a disdain for L.A”.

“Quite a few people have talked about it. But what I’ve said is already in stone, so we just go from there”. “The good thing is I’m not under contract in a year where we’d potentially be in Los Angeles“. Certainly I think long-term having player certainty where we know we have a franchise quarterback going forward, and knowing at what cost he’ll be for the next five years, that helps put the roster together. However, the Chargers walked away from negotiations with the city of San Diego in mid-June for a new stadium at the site of aging Qualcomm Stadium. He’s thrown 252 career touchdowns to 122 interceptions. “This is something special for all of the families”, McCoy said. Rivers low-rent pizza game is straight fire.
