US formally recalls Samsung Galaxy Note 7

Of the 2.5 million Note 7 phones that were shipped, about 1 million were sold in the US, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement Thursday. Customers can get a replacement phone (a Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, or a new Note 7 without the battery problem) or a refund.
In recent weeks, since the phone first launched and was sold to customers, Samsung has received 92 reports of batteries overheating in the USA alone.
Samsung has received 92 reports of batteries overheating, 26 of them leading to users being burned, according tot he CPSC.

“We are asking owners to act now by powering down their Note 7 devices and receive a replacement devices or a refund through our exchange program”.
USA aviation safety officials also have taken the unusual step of warning airline passengers not to turn on or charge the phone during flights, or put them in checked bags.
Samsung has an exploding phone problem, and it isn’t just the Galaxy Note7. Samsung told regulators the phone’s battery was slightly too big for its compartment and the tight space pinched the battery, causing it to short circuit, Kaye said.
He said Samsung’s decision to issue its own recall before reaching out to the CPSC was “not a recipe for success”, but didn’t elaborate about whether the agency planned any action against Samsung.
Samsung has officially recalled 1 million Galaxy Note 7 smartphones that were sold before September 15th.
It seemed like Samsung was finally getting its ducks in a row in dealing with the worldwide recall of 2.5 million defective and potentially explosive Galaxy Note 7 devices.
One family in St. Petersburg, Florida, said a Galaxy Note 7 left charging in their Jeep had caught fire, destroying the vehicle.
She says both Samsung and her carrier notified her about the recall. But all that power comes at a price: Users began reporting the phones were catching fire or exploding, in one case incinerating the SUV it had been left in.
