An explosion on a ferry carrying 35 tourists between the Indonesian resort islands of Bali and Lombok has killed two people, an Indonesian and a Dutch national. “Indonesia has a poor maritime safety record and there have been similar incidents in the past where no foul play was detected”. Some reports say a battery may have short-circuited above a fuel tank, causing it to blow up.

A manifest showed that passengers were from several countries including Britain, France, Italy, Portugal, Ireland and Spain. Police had initially said that she was German. “Many victims [are] injured, mostly foreigners”.

“Up to now, two people have died, but I don’t know the details of their identities”, said district police chief Sugeng, who uses only one name, like many Indonesians.

“We are still investigating the cause of the explosion – whether there is any element of intent or negligence”. Schnöll said the Austrians were not part of a tour group but had organised the holiday themselves.
