Key Indian equity market indices open in green

Mumbai: The benchmark BSE Sensex advanced over 61 points in the early session today on a fresh spell of buying in select blue-chip stocks amid mixed global cues.

Asian markets rose on Friday as weak data further dampened the expectations of an interest rate hike from the US Federal Reserve.

The NSE Nifty, which again went past the 8,800-mark to touch a high of 8,847.65 intra-day, failed to maintain its key levels and slipped to hit a low of 8,750.50 before closing 37.30 points, or 0.43 per cent, higher at 8,779.85.

Sectorwise, the BSE FMCG index gained the most – 1.23 per cent, followed by BSE IT index (up 1.22 per cent), BSE Oil & Gas index (up 1.14 per cent), BSE TECk index (up 0.99 per cent) and BSE Realty index (up 0.59 per cent).

Bank stocks succumbed to profit-booking after gaining 0.77 per cent yesterday dragging the bankex index down 0.58 per cent.

On the other hand, Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.40%), Tata Steel (2.14%), Tata Motors (1.50%), Asian Paints (1.23%), ICICI Bank (1.15%), and Housing Development Finance Corporation (1.00%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

The 30-share Sensex zoomed 186.14 points or 0.66 per cent to close at 28,599.03, its highest closing since September 9, when it had closed at 28,797.25.

In the broader markets, small-cap index also rose by 0.27 pct while mid-cap shed 0.25 per cent. Equity markets in Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Taiwan and South Korea were closed on account of national holiday.

European stocks were trading narrowly mixed ahead of monetary policy decision from the Bank of England. Key indices in Germany and United Kingdom moved up 0.10 pct to 0.21 pct while France CAC was quoted lower by 0.01 pct.

“Investor sentiment also took a bit of a dive after doubts arose with respect to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD s) forecast of an above normal rainfall in India”, said Shreyash Devalkar, Fund Manager, BNP Paribas Mutual Fund.

Market breadth was negative with 1,263 advances against 1,380 declines.
