First customer Coel said: “You had to register to get the phone today”. Cybart said he wouldn’t read too much into the 7 Plus phone selling out as a sign of how sales will go through the rest of the year. On Apple’s website, now the wait time is of 2-3 weeks.

Apple’s iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models entered the Chinese market on Friday with pre-orders of the 7 Plus, and the iPhone 7 in jet-black color, already sold out.

“We sincerely appreciate our customers’ patience as we work hard to get the new iPhone into the hands of everyone who wants one as quickly as possible”, Apple said in the statement.

Apple’s Greater China sales dropped by a third in April-June, albeit after more than doubling a year earlier, while its market share has fallen to around 7.8 percent, placing it fifth behind local rivals Huawei, OPPO and Vivo.

Rod Canion, co-founder of Compaq Computers, said he’s one of those who buy a new iPhone every time one comes out.

But Apple has not lost its shine for all customers.

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are set to launch on September 16th, but Apple has warned customers that there will be limited quantities available at retail locations on Friday.

However, Apple will refrain from reporting first weekend sales figures as it stated that initial sales numbers will be governed by supply and not demand. Therefore, they are turning out to be a not-so-useful metric for both investors and customers.

Availability of the black iPhone 7 has also been exhausted, although customers will be able to continue placing advance orders online.

The jet black variants are even rarer.

Candy Leung, 26, who bought a 7 Plus model, seemed unimpressed by the new wireless earphones: “My first impression is that they could be lost really easily”.
