Pre-orders open for the privacy-centric Blackphone 2

Smartphone users who are concerned about privacy and security may want to wait until September to buy a new smartphone. Silent Circle is now accepting pre-orders for the aptly-named Blackphone 2.

There is no mention of the price and potential buyers are directed to contact sales for information.

The one primary problem with the Blackphone 2 is the lack of support for Google Apps, but Silent Circle claims it is doing something about it with plans to create its own secure app store.

The second-generation Blackphone handset focused on a secure mobile experience arrives next month. The Blackphone 2 will have a 5.5-inch screen with 1080p resolution, octa-core Qualcomm processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, and 13MP rear camera. The company received negative feedback from rival BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB), which claimed Silent Circle’s phone isn’t good enough for enterprise customers.

While Silent Circle’s phone apps still send data over a standard cellular or wireless data connection, it functions like a highly encrypted Skype – routing encrypted calls through its network in Canada and out to other Silent Phone users.

While Silent Circle may be accepting pre-orders, the company seems to be making the process more hard and confusing than it needs to be.

The Blackphone 2, announced this past March, is a successor to the original Blackphone from 2014. Both devices will feature SilentOS, which is a form of Android with more security-oriented features and privacy-friendly apps.

The company is still working on a tablet version, to be known at the Blackphone+, but has so far shared little about the device.
