Hoddle: Playing at Wembley will hinder Tottenham

Joao Moutinho will step out in Wembley Stadium on Wednesday night in the red and white of Monaco as the French club takes on Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League.

Toby Alderweireld pulled one back for Spurs just before half-time, but Monaco’s possession football killed the home side’s momentum after the interval.

Midfield: Mousa Dembele is back in contention after missing the first four league games of the season through suspension and as long as the Belgian worldwide is match fit, I think we could see him come in to the side tomorrow.

“European nights at White Hart Lane have been very special down the years and I know when we had a good run in the Champions League in my time as manager, the home advantage was massive for us. It’s true that we created more chances [in the second half], more corners, more shots, more position, all of that – we were better than Monaco but they were more effective”. We need to work, to show more hunger. It was easy for Monaco to score.

“We need to behave naturally and not try to find an excuse, that’s never good”, said Pochettino, 44.

“It’s a shame. Today was a good opportunity to give to our fans a very good performance and victory but it’s a shame that we can not”.

You can’t really blame the Argentine, given that his team showed none of the swashbuckling style of play that had granted them the occasion, bar a 15 minute spell at the start of the game before the first goal.

However Kane said: “People said that this time past year and I went on to win the Golden Boot and score 30 goals for club and country”.

Eric Dier says Spurs can benefit from a bigger pitch when they play their Champions League games at Wembley this season. Tottenham have made things much harder on themselves by dropping their home opener. We believe in the way we play and it’s a good chance to play on a big pitch. “And now we are in the Champions league we need to enjoy it, we need to perform well and we need to get great team performances”. The full-backs will have more space to push into, making the pitch big, giving the creative players more room to pick their passes.
