USA jets fly over S Korea in show of force

Pyongyang has demanded that the U.S. replace the armistice in the Korean Peninsula with a peace treaty, but U.S. President Barack Obama refuses to negotiate until the North abandons its nuclear program.

The American supersonic B-1B Lancers flew over South Korea on Tuesday as the United States pledged its “unshakeable commitment” to defend its allies in the region, following North Korea’s fifth and largest-ever nuclear test conducted last week.

North Korea countered on Wednesday saying that it was the USA that was inflaming tensions.

The North has evaded a decade of United Nations sanctions to develop the uranium enrichment process, enabling it to run an effectively self-sufficient nuclear program that is capable of producing around six nuclear bombs a year, they said. “Measures to qualitatively strengthen the state’s nuclear force will continue”, the statement said, hinting at the possibility of additional nuclear tests.
