Mets 2B Walker set for season-ending back surgery

Last night, Mets ace Jacob deGrom fought through just five innings in a loss to the Marlins, allowing four walks and three runs, and his normally electric fastball was clocked as slow as 91 miles per hour.

Jacob deGrom likely will miss his next start because of right forearm soreness.

At least not so far. There was an insistence from all involved that everything was fine, but manager Terry Collins seemed to indicate that wasn’t the case when speaking to the media on Friday. He got seven days off before pitching Thursday night.

After leaving the game, deGrom motioned to trainer Ray Ramirez to follow him into the Mets clubhouse, and the trainer followed the starter.

Giants outfielder Hunter Pence smashed a two-run homer to left-center field in the first to open the scoring against the Cubs, who rallied for a 5-4 win. Yelich went 3 for 4 with a three-run home run and two singles en route to four RBIs and two stolen bases.

Right-hander Jose Urena (3-5) earned the win after allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out two over six innings.

Had he finished the season with those numbers, he would have been one of the most attractive free agents on the market, and he would have gotten that huge pay day baseball players work so hard for during the early part of their careers. He was behind in the count, he had a lot of pitches in five innings. He is batting.447 with four doubles and 11 RBIs in 11 games since coming off the disabled list August 19.

Christian Yelich showed off his bat, legs and glove, capped by hitting a three-run homer that helped the Marlins end their season-worst five-game losing streak.

I hope for Walker’s sake that someone takes a chance on him and signs him to a good contract, because I like to see good things happen for good people.

Jay Bruce finally got the Mets on the board in the sixth when he blasted his third homer with the team, and added an RBI single in the eighth that cut the deficit to 6-2. It was the 17th home run this season and fourth in 11 at-bats for the reigning NL player of the week.

Cabrera (left knee) and Cespedes (right quad) didn’t start for the Mets, who learned Wednesday that fellow middle-of-the-order hitter Neil Walker will undergo season-ending back surgery.

Marlins: RHP Andrew Cashner threw a bullpen session and Mattingly said he felt good about him starting on Friday.
