Mets’ silence casts next Jacob deGrom start into question

The Mets are closing in on the second wild-card spot in the National League and now trail the Cardinals by just 1.5 games.
“There’s nothing like coming to the ballpark in the big leagues in the month of September in a pennant race”, Collins said, his voice rising. It worked right off the bat, with Christian Yelich hitting a two-run homer in his first career plate appearance batting cleanup. He also made an incredible diving catch with the bases loaded and two outs, although he did drop a routine fly ball for an error. Miami also trails multiple other teams in the Wild Card standings.
Unfortunately we didn’t get the win.
“We’ve seen that a couple times from J.T.”, Mattingly said.
The 28-year-old righty is 7-8 with a 3.04 ERA in 24 starts.
He was pitching Thursday on extra rest because Collins and pitching coach Dan Warthen thought he looked worn out in the previous two. Mets manager Terry Collins said he did not know about the incident after the game, and deGrom downplayed any physical issues.
But Collins could tell something was off.
“What did I walk, four guys?”
Generally speaking, the first thing that goes for a pitcher with an arm injury is command. That’s just not Jake. That would be all for deGrom on the night, who departed in a three run hole.
The 2014 NL Rookie of the Year has been hit hard in losing his last three starts.
The wins and the injuries continued piling up for the Mets on Wednesday when Kelly Johnson laced a tiebreaking three-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift NY to a 5-2 win over the Marlins at Citi Field. The Mets had the bases loaded before Michael Conforto grounded into a double play while Yoenis Cespedes struck out.
The Mets will use Wilmer Flores and Kelly Johnson at second base.
“The more I tried to push through it, the more I realized I was hurting the team and myself”, Walker said.
Yelich hit his 18th homer in the seventh.
After playing in a franchise-record 23 straight games that were decided by three runs or less, the Marlins were finally involved in one that wasn’t considered close, one way or the other.
The New York Mets are losing players nearly as fast as they are winning games. He’s getting treatment and could play this weekend at Cleveland.

Mets: Cespedes and Cabrera didn’t start after it rained most of the afternoon. The Marlins promoted four players from Triple-A New Orleans: RHP Brian Ellington, OF Destin Hood, RHP Nefi Ogando and C Tomas Telis. As he left the dugout after five innings against Miami, he waved for the team trainer to join him. He’ll pitch Friday night at AL Central-leading Cleveland against Carlos Carrasco (9-7, 3.23).
