He said that the government has ordered its hospitals not to refuse to admit any patient with suspected dengue and chikungunya. “80-year-old Mahendra Singh from Ghaziabad died of chikungunya complications yesterday afternoon”, hospital authorities said. Isha, from Kabir Nagar, had died on September 1, officials said.
Jain, meanwhile, said unlike dengue, chikungunya in itself can not cause death.
Talking about the recent casualties, Jain stated that four of the five deaths had been reported from the same hospital, which made the situation quite suspicious.
Chikungunya and dengue have wreaked havoc in Delhi with the death toll from the two vector-borne diseases climbing to 30 even as the number of affected people has crossed 2,800.
In a report released on Thursday on vector-borne disease cases at AIIMS, the doctors said, “Nine dengue patients have died from September 1 till date”.
Besides Delhi, Pune has also been struggling the disease with over 439 cases of Chikungunya between January and August this year as against only 35 in the same period last year.
The Government of Delhi asserted in the High Court that fewer number of chikungunya and dengue cases were reported in Delhi this year compared to last year.
A private hospital in Delhi on Wednesday said five persons have died from complications caused by chikungunya, bringing the toll caused by the disease to 10.
“I have also instructed the Delhi Government to check the water logging at construction sites also”, he added.
Jain also said that the deaths due to the disease are suspicious, as four out of the six cases said to be related to chikungunya have been reported from the same hospital. Our hospitals are not refusing to admit patients.
The woman had tested positive for chikungunya on Sunday.
At AIIMS laboratories, 1,360 chikungunya blood test samples have tested positive till September 11.
Authorities at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said, Pandey was kept under the care of a senior specialist in the Department of Medicine and a team of doctors from the Internal Medicine-ICU.
“In one video conference, I addressed the state Health Ministers”.
The vector-borne disease had claimed its first victim on July 21 when a girl from Jafrabad in northeast Delhi died at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital.
He also asked the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) of the Health Ministry, Delhi Government and the Municipal Corporations to further coordinate their awareness activities towards this end.

Nadda said the Centre has held a review meeting in this regard and found out that there is an increase in cases of Chikungunya in Delhi, whereas the hike in cases of Dengue have been reported from West Bengal, Odisha and Karnataka.
