WTA Tennis: Romania’s Simona Halep is back to her best
The final was played on the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and Mattek-Sands wore knee-high socks and a left wrist band with the same red-and-white-striped, star-spangled design she did while teaming with Jack Sock to win a gold medal in mixed doubles at the Rio Olympics last month.

Kerber bookended her Grand Slam breakout year in dramatic fashion on Saturday, winning the U.S. Open in three sets. Pliskova then won the next service game to take a 5-3 lead in the set, before failing to break Kerber and allowing her to trim it to 5-4.
As a dad, you always want you little girl’s dreams to come true. They alternated wins until it was a 3-3 tie in the set, when Pliskova broke in the seventh game and slapped a forehand volley lob that Kerber could not get to.
Angelique Kerber poses with the US Open trophy at Flushing Meadows. Yeah, working hard. Just have a great team around you and really love what you are doing.
“I’m really surprised, actually, that I really try to stay positive… that I’m always fighting”. I have to be the one who is aggressive.
In 2016, Kerber beat Serena Williams in the Australian Open final, lost to Williams in the Wimbledon final, took home the silver medal, losing to Monica Puig of Puerto Rico, at the Olympics and reached the No. 1 spot when Williams lost to Pliskova in the semifinals in NY. When Williams was beaten by Pliskova in the semifinals, it assured that No. 2 Kerber would displace Williams as No. 1 in the world, a ranking she has held for 186 weeks. “You have to go with a lot of patience”, she said.
The US player was predominating in the world ranking since 2013, and Kerber materialized her deed after winning in the US Open, last Grand Slam of the present season, and the second Kerber wins in her whole tennis playing career.
“I knew I had the chance to beat anyone if I played my game”.
“When I was a kid”, Kerber said after the match. The year 2016 started off bright because Angelique had won the Australian Open. The five-times grand slam champion Maria Sharapova has been sidelined on a two-year doping ban. “I’d like to congratulate you on everything you have done”, said Wawrinka who has now won his last 11 finals.
It’s been quite a summer for Kerber, but as she fell to the ground after her victory, the phrases “champis United States on” and “number one”, started to sink in and she couldn’t wipe the smile off her face.
Now it was a match, and as they went to the third set, both women began showing more and more emotion. She made quick work of the first round, beating Ekaterina Makarova in two straight sets and making her way eventually into the semi-finals but then Williams just couldn’t take the heat.
Williams certainly didn’t think losing her No. 1 ranking made for a nice change. “To win in Cincinnati was the biggest title of my career”, she said.
If Williams can overcome a knee injury, the 22-time major champion could reclaim top spot this autumn given she has very few ranking points to defend after hardly featuring at the end of a year ago.

That younger generation, Navratilova said, was galvanized by Kerber’s victory over Williams in Melbourne, which was enough to spark a “collective confidence” among players long conditioned to think of Williams as unbeatable.
