Calls to representatives for Robby Gordon were not immediately returned Thursday.

Known in racing circles as “Baja Bob”, the elder Gordon was a five-time victor of the grueling off-road competitions in the desert peninsula south of the USA border.

Robby Gordon spoke to reporters outside the home, saying the family was obviously “grieving the death of my dad, Rob, and his wife, Sharon”.

The Orange County coroner’s office identified the deceased as Robert Gordon, 68, and Sharon Gordon, 57.

Gordon says he will speak about the deaths again once authorities conclude their investigation.

The former NASCAR star thanked the racing and the horse-raising communities for their support.

“My father is still my inspiration for motorsports and competition in general, and he was in the horse racing business and taught me at a young age that one horsepower wasn’t going to be enough, [that I was] gonna do something different – and I was fortunate to do something different”.

Robby Gordon’s Stadium Super Trucks racing team is scheduled to race at this weekend’s Sand Sports Super Show in Costa Mesa.

Former NASCAR racer Robby Gordon, right, with family friend Steve Nichols, left, makes a statement to member of the media gathered outside his home in Orange, Calif., on September 15, 2016. That friend apparently found the bodies and called 911 to the residence in Orange County, Calif., about 30 miles outside Los Angeles. Police say a rifle was also found.

Bob Gordon, Johnson told media members, “gave me my first ride in an off-road buggy”. No further details on the motive or circumstances were released. An undisclosed weapon was found at the scene.

“I feel very sad”, she said.

In 2013 he founded the Speed Energy Formula Off-Road series and recently began racing in it. Johnson and the elder Gordon remained in contact and Johnson on Thursday tweeted a picture of them once talking in the pits at a NASCAR race.

A six-time Cup champion, Johnson was a longtime friend of the Gordon family.

Johnson posted on Twitter an image of himself with Bob Gordon at a Sprint Cup race. Gordon is one of only four drivers to compete in the Indy 500 and NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.

Beccy Gordon, the wife of 2014 Indianapolis 500 victor Ryan Hunter-Reay, gave birth to a boy Wednesday. Hunter-Reay would appear as scheduled in a weekend race in Sonoma County, Gordon said.
