Attorneys for ‘Making a Murderer’ convict press for release

“Making a Murderer” subject Brendan Dassey should be released while the government appeals his overturned conviction, according to papers filed Wednesday by Dassey’s attorneys.

However, a judge ordered in August Dassey be released after deciding the then-16-year-old was tricked into confessing that he helped his uncle by investigators.

“On September 14, 2016, we filed a motion asking the Court to release Brendan on bond during the State of Wisconsin’s appeal”, Dassey’s lawyers at the Northwestern University’s Center on Wrongful Convictions of Youth said in a statement (via Buzzfeed).

As for Dassey’s uncle, Steven Avery, who is also serving life for the murder, his attorney, Kathleen Zellner, recently filed a request to retest evidence used in the trial against him in an attempt to prove that local investigators planted evidence.

TMZ states that court documents show Brendan’s legal team have claimed that “he’s not a danger to the public” and should be released “while the process plays out”. Lawyers also provided the court with a summary of a release plan for Dassey that would involve a social worker from the Bluhm Legal Clinic, along with support from members of his family.

It looks like Dassey will have an extended stay in prison and Netflix will have to be ready with surprises as remarkable happenings are unfolding.

“Making a Murderer”, a hugely popular Netflix docu-series that began airing last December, featured the prosecutions of Avery and Dassey in the 2005 murder of the 25-year-old Halbach.

Dassey’s lawyers also point at his almost spotless behavioral record during his decade-long stint in prison as another reason why Dassey should be released during appeal process. Many believed that Avery was specifically targeted by law enforcement after he sued the county for millions when his rape conviction was overturned.
