New Jersey dominated Newsweek’s “America’s Top High Schools” list released today, taking four of the top five spots in the rankings.

The highest ranked Colorado school is Colorado Early College Fort Collins, which was ranked No. 66 nationally.
Gretchen Whitney in California, global Academy in Michigan and Payton College Preparatory High School in Illinois rounded out the Top 10.
Birmingham Public Schools placed both of its high schools Groves (222) and Seaholm (484) in the news magazines top 500.
Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach was No. 116. But the school didn’t make an appearance on the list at all previous year.
Within the top 10 on the list, six schools were in New Jersey, with the the No. 1 school listed as Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Virginia.
The rankings are intended to identify high schools that have the highest performance on state tests and best prepare students for college, according to Newsweek.
Newsweek bases its school rankings on a range of data on those that prepare their students the best for college.
That list ranks schools on all the above measures but also accounts for the effects of social inequality on education by factoring in student poverty.
Thirty-eight percent of the students in the school district come from families who qualify for economic assistance programs, such as the free or reduced-price lunch programs, according to the New York state Education Department.

Debra Cline, assistant superintendent of schools for Sevier County, which includes both Gatlinburg-Pittman and Pigeon Forge high schools, said the rankings reflect the schools’ commitment to meeting the “social, emotional and academic needs of all students”.
