Delhi has been reeling under chikungunya, with death toll reaching six from complications arising from the vector-borne disease.

Chikungunya cases in the national capital have sharply risen to over 1,000 this season, marking a jump of almost 90 per cent from its count last week. Four of these deaths took place at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH).

Delhi has so far witnessed 31 deaths (Please check 31 was just on Thursday in a copy yesterday) due to the vector-borne diseases. He urged people to rely on the symptomatic treatment for chikungunya and consume lots of liquids as the disease is generally non-fatal.

Pandey, who was referred to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital from a Ghaziabad hospital, had succumbed to the disease at the hospital at 4 AM after suffering chikungunya with sepsis. “We are in the process of making chikungunya notifiable,”said a municipal health official, on condition of anonymity”. “Ashok Chauhan, 62, from Aligarh also died of chikungunya yesterday. He too was admitted in ICU on September 11 and his RT-PCR test came positive”, SGRH authorities said.

In Delhi alone, the death toll for dengue stands at 14, followed closely by its bone-breaking cousin, Chikungunya. There is no second opinion that death does not occur due to chikungunya.

As per the reports of civic bodies that in the year 2015, the highest number of dengue cases were reported with a total of 15,876 people infected by the vector-borne disease and 60 people lost their life in last year due to the dengue.

Besides, five other fatalities have been reported by different hospitals in the city, which have not been acknowledged yet by the SDMC. Almost 80% of the patients them are coming from outside Delhi. Jain said 1,000 extra beds were being arranged even in state-run hospitals even has he added, “At our hospital, about 1,500 beds are lying vacant”.

Meanwhile, AIIMS laboratories have tested 1,443 chikungunya blood test samples positive till Tuesday.

“The patient had multi-organ failure triggered by chikungunya and died on September 13 evening”, a senior official of the hospital said.
