‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’: Zellweger charming on her way to big-screen motherhood

After Bridget has a one-night stand with Jack and a surprise reunion with Mark, she ends up pregnant and unable to determine the paternity. But it works when Mr. Darcy and Bridget dance around the elephant in the franchise-can’t these two ultimately embrace their undying love for one another?

Firth spoke to CBS News about coming back to the franchise, being a mostly useless suitor and why we shouldn’t try to read too much into romantic comedies. I didn’t expect the movie to be so amusing and I thought it was even better than the first two. In Britain, where our fictional Bridget resides, almost half of babies are born outside of marriage. I believe that with – from what I’ve experienced with the people that I’m closest to, you evolve when you become a mom. In fact, walking out of the cinema after watching it, our thoughts immediately turned to when we’ll see her again – and it seems star Renée Zellweger is on the same wavelength.

Well, not necessarily, as the trailers for this third movie, Bridget Jones’s Baby, suggest all is not rosy with our heroine.

“It only started to pull me when I saw the script going in the right direction”. The performances are perfectly fine, although the comedic timing is off, for the most part, and there is a feeling of familiarity about the whole thing as Bridget still falls over, hooks up with the wrong guy and, even though she should know better, generally makes a mess of things.

But just in case you think you’ve seen the last of the adventures Bridget Jones, think again. Apparently she wrote her own dialog as she is listed as co-screenwriter, and her scenes have a wit and crackle that is sorely missing from the rest of the film. I’m just saying she should have done a little nip and tuck while she was at it. Its market, which features in a key scene in the film, has gone from a farmers’ market open two days a week in 2001 to a tourist hub open for six, making shooting on location hard. And I want to add that there’s a twist at the end that could make for a hilarious fourth movie. She flees in the morning – she doesn’t know he’s a famous billionaire – and days later finds herself back in Mark’s bed for a sudden tryst. ‘It could be interesting to watch her improvising her way through motherhood. Are they getting better treatment story-wise than they used to? All of the cast do fine in their roles, but it is Emma Thompson as Bridget’s gynaecologist Dr Rawlings that is the standout in the film, with her consistently amusing quips and flawless timing.

Yet it feels current because they’ve allowed the character to grow.
