According to U.S. Undersecretary of Education Ted Mitchell the decision came as a result of multiple state and federal investigation into the now defunct schools practices.
In August, an accreditation board found that ITT hadn’t met its standards and wasn’t likely to. Students who attended ITT at the time of its closure are eligible to have their federal loans wiped away if they don’t complete their program elsewhere.
The case is In re ITT Education Services Inc, 16-07207, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of Indiana. The closing of its campuses leaves current students with various options from attempting to transfer their credits to a loan forgiveness program. The federal government banned the school from accepting any more students with federal aid, which was a huge blow for the school, since it made most of its money from that aid. Senator Elizabeth Warren wrote a scathing report on the for profit school industry a few months ago. “ITT Tech failed, again, to meet the scandalously low standards of its accrediting agency but still sucked down a whopping $600 million in taxpayer dollars previous year”, Warren wrote.
Traina is also working to find a way for the final class off ITT students to graduate. “ITT charged high tuition for an education that is substandard to a high school education”. Less than 18 months ago, thousand of students at another high-profile for-profit chain were forced into the same situation.
