White House plans to accept 110K refugees

President Barrack Obama will host a summit in NY next week to discuss the need of the U.S.to augment its refugee programs as it gears to welcome 110,000 more refugees in the next 12 months. Secretary of State John Kerry briefed Congress on the new goal Tuesday, the official said. The United States will admit up to 110,000 refugees in fiscal 2017, up from 85,000 this fiscal year. Just a few weeks ago, the State Department was hinting at a target of 100,000 refugees next year, and it’s not clear why the additional 10,000 were added.

Kerry’s announcement came the same day German authorities detained three Syrian refugees they said had ties to ISIS. At the current pace, some 30,000 could be approved for resettlement over the next 12 months.

Republicans have hammered the Obama administration’s new plans to increase the number of refugees. “As Secretary [Kerry] has said, this is who we are; this is America at its best”, the department said in a statement.

Trump and many in his party have fomented fears that there could be Islamic terrorists in their midst – and who have called for a total ban on Syrian refugees.

What happens next remains to be seen.

44% of those polls said the US should be doing more to alleviate the refugee crisis, while 19% said it should be doing less.

Communities are grappling with the influx of refugees, and the cost of housing and educating them.

“We’re not interested in forcing people into situations in which they are unwanted in many respects”, Haines said. Republican nominee Donald Trump wants to bar Syrian refugees completely, alleging that terrorists could be hiding among them. The organization notes, however, that the increase will not be enough to address the scope of the current refugee crisis, and that Congress and the administration should work together to properly fund the US resettlement program.

Some Republicans have criticized President Obama’s plans to admit 110,000 refugees to the United States over the next year.

Backing the idea of a quota system for taking in migrants, the German leader said “everyone must do their part”, and that “a common solution must be found”, during a TV interview in August.

Many blame the US, Britain and other major Western powers for the exodus of refugees to the West and view Washington and its allies as major supporters of terrorism and war in the violence-hit regions such as Syria, where Takfiri terrorist groups such as Daesh (ISIL) have been wreaking havoc over the past years.

“Terrorists have announced that they will infiltrate the refugee population and have successfully done so multiple times in Europe over the previous year”, Session added.

On Wednesday, during opening remarks before the UN’s general assembly, Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon called on more of the global community to provide refugees with the housing, assistance and integration needed for a better life.
