Police catch alleged serial killer after woman’s 911 call

Ashland Police Department and Ohio BCI execute a search warrant on a home where a woman had been abducted.

She is heard telling the operator she was using Grate’s mobile phone while he slept in the same room and was whispering for fear of waking him.

When asked if she was bleeding, the woman replied, “Not anymore”.

He was taken into custody in Ashland, Ohio early Tuesday following the woman’s nervous call when she reported she was being held inside the home against her will, according to ABC affiliate WEWS-TV in Cleveland, Ohio. Authorities say Grate led them to a home in Mansfield where a third body was found. A decision on additional charges was expected to be announced Thursday.

Police confirmed Wednesday that one of the bodies was that of 43-year-old Stacey Stanley, of Greenwich, Ohio, who had been reported missing from Huron County.

She replies, “He can catch me and he’s strong”.

The Ashland home where the woman was held captive.. The police statement says the coroner hasn’t determined her cause of death or identified the second body.

Investigators have charged Shawn Grate, 40, with one count of abduction.

The house was cordoned off Wednesday with yellow police tape, and two bouquets of sunflowers were placed in front with a teddy bear and a cross with Stanley’s name and the message: “You are loved by many”.

Police believe one of those bodies may be Elizabeth Griffith who disappeared on August 16 in Ashland. Authorities found decomposed remains down a ravine in a wooded area behind a house. Couch Page added that authorities haven’t identified the female remains found at that scene.

Members of the Ashland community are holding a vigil for the victims involved in the abduction and murders in Ashland and Richland Counties. It wasn’t clear whether he had an attorney and CNN was unable to reach anyone in his family.

Records from several OH counties show arrests and charges against the 40-year-old going back to 1996, including abduction, theft, domestic violence, burglary, assault and drug abuse.
